So I moved to Austin

Austin, Bikes, Boston, Thoughts, Travel No Comments

What? When? Why?  I’ve been hearing a lot of that.

The When and What? I spent the second half of December traveling through the North East and saying my goodbyes.  Then I took off South for what became a week and a half long road trip (through NJ, NC, and NOLA) which was fantastic (another post to follow, with photos of course).  I am now in Austin, living with Jordan and his pup Bay.  I have already met some fantastic and exciting people.  It feels quite different than Boston.  I feel different.  I’m both comfortable and uncomfortable – but in good ways.  What am I up to?  Well, looking for job(s) in a variety of areas, biking everywhere, hanging with idealistic and charming hippies, derby girls and spending as little money as possible.

The Why?  That’s a complicated question.  Mostly because I didn’t even know the answer myself until recently.  Don’t worry – I could probably publish a book/memoir about it, and I just might.  So maybe you should worry.

The important question: Am I happy?  Yes.

The debatable question: Am I coming back?  Yes.  In the late spring/summer.  But likely only staying in Boston for a few more months, either through the summer or potentially the fall football season.

My ongoing TO-DO list:

Join a book club √ (Not yo Momma’s Book Club)

Get in really good shape for biking (in progress! I hope to do some pedicabbing starting in March. Also, I’m selling my bike and getting a bigger/faster one)

Find long bike rides √ (A2W have been a great source for finding social rides and events, and I also registered for the 50 mi Hill Country Ride for AIDS in April)

Sign up to volunteer at SXSW √ (also going to look for some paid gigs during the fesitval)

Find sports leagues (in progress!  who knows, maybe I’ll strap on some skates and join the derby…)

Find good coffee shops with free-wifi √ (this was easy peasy, there’s 3 in my neighborhood that are 24 hrs! Also, there’s the mansion sized Whole Foods downtown that gives me tingles just to walk into)

Go to Barton Springs, a set of four natural water springs in Austin

Shape up my website(s) (unfortunately, this is secondary to paid gigs and therefore has taken a while to complete)

More soon…off to explore some more!
